Located on Lafayette Street between Great Jones and Bond in Manhattan, the site represents a certain typology of left over sliver lots generated by atypical street intersections within the overall city grid. For the purposes of this project, the site comprises of the empty lots on either side of Lafayette Street.
In researching other sites of this nature, it was found that the typical use for this type of space was advertising. The same holds true for the subject site as a range of “cell space for display” was discovered. Examples of this are the “cells” of bills surrounding the site fences, “cells” of cobblestone in the roads, surrounding storefront cells, and subway grate cells marching through the site. Most importantly, this cell space displayed a labor about the site, most explicitly in the existing Body shop on the west side of the site.
